Gift giving to the host at a party is not just allowable, but it is necessary. Must be gift is an occasion. For example, when i attend a dinner party i can bring something for drinking, and when i attend a birthday party i can bring the chocolate, or cake. Also, if this is the first visit, it is better for me to bring a bouquet of flower.
